Of Mice and Men

I think that mouses (mice?) are so interesting-- the computer kind, I mean. I've been paying close attention to mine today at work and have come up with a few questions.

    1. Why does the cursor move differently relative to the position of the cord? For example, I find when the cord is stretched, I have more difficulty controlling the cursor....

    2. What causes my mouse to light up when I move it?

    3. What is the purpose of this lighting up?

    4. What causes a mouse to work better on a mouse pad than on the desktop?

    5. Why do we call it a mouse?
